In late 2020, the good folks at Food52 asked me to update my headnote to the Buttermilk Chess pie recipe. I added an anecdote about me as an eager-to-please new bride searching for a “not-too-sweet” dessert. Thirty-plus years later, that little pie recipe is still my go-to for something sweet and easy to bake.
A Favorite Pie
I’ve baked this pie for more than 30 years now, and it’s always tasty. I use the best buttermilk I can find (Marburger is my favorite brand), butter and vanilla. It’s true what they say ~ when recipes call for just a few ingredients, make sure they’re the best. If you need a good pie recipe, here’s one a good one to try.
