May 21, 2023 By Lucy Mercer Leave a Comment

Guest Post by Chan Weeks, Executive Director, Keep Douglasville Beautiful

The days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer – spring is here and summer is on its way! With summer comes farmers markets and all the delicious bounties of the garden. The Church Street Farmers Market in Douglasville tops the list of local markets to visit in the metro Atlanta area.

This year, the market opens May 30 and will run through October 24 bringing all your favorites on Tuesdays from 3 to 7 pm in downtown Douglasville at 6730 Church Street. The market is a Georgia Fresh for Less market accepting SNAP/EBT and doubling it! When you spend $10, you get $10 for free to spend on fresh, local fruits and vegetables.

The idea for the Church Street Farmers Market originated in 2018 out of a need in the community for access to higher quality and more nutritious food. A group formed under the umbrella of the Live Healthy Douglas Coalition made up of Cobb and Douglas Public Health, The University of Georgia Extension Douglas County, Douglas County Parks and Recreation and the City of Douglasville’s Keep Douglasville Beautiful. These passionate individuals worked tirelessly to create the Church Street Farmers Market with the help of a dedicated AmeriCorps VISTA.

In June 2020, we held the first Church Street Farmers Market with just a handful of local growers and vendors. The word started to spread and by the end of the season there were 12 vendors regularly setup to provide garden fresh vegetables and handmade creations. The market has grown to host 20+ vendors with over 350 people attending weekly expanding to include meats, live plants, handmade crafts and baked goods. The Church Street Farmers Market strives to keep no less than 50% of vendors as farm vendors maintaining the initial need of providing fresh, local fruits and vegetables to the community.

Special Events Slated for the Farmers Market

This year, 2023, marks the 4th season for the market and we expect the number of vendors and attendance to be even greater. Special events include live cooking demonstrations using seasonal produce found at the market, educational events on a wide range of gardening-related topics, special guest booths and free produce giveaways. Every week will be worth the visit!
