A highlight of my gardening year is planning my window plantings. I have three of these rustic hayracks across my front porch and I try to fill them with plants throughout the warm seasons.Over the years, I’ve tried out some lovely combinations of annuals. Celosia, begonias, coleus and even calla lilies appeared. But I think this year’s is my favorite and it’s ridiculously simple.

Golden Pothos and Croton in Window Boxes
The focal point of the racks is croton, a tropical plant that won’t survive our Atlanta winters. I bring it inside in the winter and let it go dormant, and it somehow manages to bounce back in spring. The green and gold foliage with a shot of red thrives in our hot summers and is remarkably drought tolerant.

Golden pothos surrounds the crotons and spills over the edges of the planter. Pothos is a happy plant, content to put out its tender vines in pots around my home.
Total cost for this year’s window boxes: $0. Crotons are from 2024 and the last time I paid for pothos I had a kid in middle school.

Takeaway? Look around your home for plants that will thrive in your windowboxes. Tropical houseplants like pothos enjoy a season outside in the heat and humidity of a Georgia summer. And when fall arrives, I’ll just re-pot everything and put them inside.
