Make Container Gardens for Mother’s Day

May 9, 2025 By Lucy Mercer Leave a Comment

The best Mother’s Day gift I ever gave my mom was really her suggestion. She wanted her spring planters filled and she wanted her granddaughters to choose the designs.

The girls were probably 12 and 5 and we did it all it in a day. We shopped at the Home Depot Garden Center, loading up on potting soil and annuals and brought them to her house. Mom was kind of frail by this time, and watched from inside the house as the girls created the pots that would go on her back patio.

The girls learned all about thrillers, fillers and spillers and how to pot plants and my mom got the enjoyment of watching them work and a summer full of beautiful flowers.

If you’re looking for a Mother’s Day gift that’s more than a gift card, give plants. And if you’re looking for a fun project with your kids, give a gift of container gardens. You can choose herbs, like the one above, or flowers,

Many herbs do well in containers. Try rosemary, basil and thyme for a summer-y herb garden.

You can choose vegetables, too, for a container garden. There are many “patio” types of vegetables like cherry tomatoes and eggplants and peppers that are sold in planters complete with cages to support the branches.

And remember that containers can be adjusted at any time. If the basil needs more water than the container provides, Mom can pull it out and put it in her garden. Lavender and rosemary are always finicky, as far as I’m concerned, and won’t last long in a mixed container.

How about you? Have you ever given a gift of gardening for Mother’s Day? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear from you.

And Happy Mother’s Day!
