Protect Potted Plants from Critters

February 26, 2024 By Lucy Mercer 1 Comment

Protect potted plants from nibbling critters with this handy hack.

Do you know what this gizmo is?

I discovered this hack while touring a beautiful spring garden at the Keep Smyrna Beautiful garden tour in April 2024. The McLinden Place garden was full of gorgeous hostas, but voles were apparently a threat.

The homeowner showed his handy hack for protecting the hostas: an inexpensive galvanized metal mending plate from Home Depot. At 98 cents apiece, you can buy multiples and place them in your pots right on top of the soil or mulch to keep burrowing critters from destroying your plants.

Simply place the metal plate on the surface of the mulch (or soil). The sharp edges prevent voles from chewing on your plants. Photo by Lucy Mercer/A Cook and Her Books.

What a great idea! Squirrels are my problem. Whenever I plant something new, in the ground or in a pot, they start digging around the plant to bury their nuts. I’ve tried several things to prevent this. I’ll add this to my repertoire. Thanks for sharing.
