Mulching the Vegetable Garden

Mulching the vegetable garden makes your garden more efficient and, let’s be honest, better looking. Just like a toddler who carries a security blanket for all occasions, young plants need a layer of protection from weather extremes. A light and fluffy blanket of pine straw or wood mulch keeps evaporation in check and moderates soil temps.

Salt Hay recently sent me samples of their weed free pine and salt hay products. I used them to protect the vegetables in my keyhole garden and the tender plants in the strawberry bed, as well as hydrangeas in the landscape. Both products are convenient and good quality (no weeds or seeds!).

Salt hay is an OMRI listed product that, unlike wheat straw, has no seeds that can germinate in your garden bed. One box was enough to mulch my 6 X 6 keyhole garden with a fluffy protective layer. Check out how I’ve used Salt Hay mulch products in my garden:
